Homework Essay
Introduction:This assignment is wrote when we learnt about arguments. The purpose of the assignment is to learn how to write arguments using claim, evidence, warrant, backing and rebuttal.
Reflection: I think the hardest part of the assignment is to find the balance between "doing homework is good" and "homework is bad" because I want to argue that homework brings both benefits and costs. I think I did well in organizing the essay structure, it's clear what's the claim and evidence. If I could do this again, i would like to add some backings because I think my backings don't work pretty well. I learnt how to write arguments from this assignment.

More and more schools assign student tons of homework. Students get stressed out, and teachers complain about the quality of student’s submitted homework. Both sides get mad because of homework. People start to discuss if the homework really helps students or not. I think that schools do need to give student homework, but not too much homework.
Homework is good for kids because homework actually does help students to remember what they learned in class. Why do students go to school? To study, of course. Students spend 8 hours in school. They study various subjects. They need time after school to “digest” what they learnt in school, or they will probably forget it the next day. “Narrowly parsed, this is undoubtedly a true finding. For example, the study concluded that students who don't do their homework will not see any increase in their achievement in school. “(By Diane Ravitch, Historian, NYU professor ). Homework provides students a chance to review and find questions, so students need to do some homework.
Homework also stop student from hanging out in the streets and causing trouble. Students need to spend some time on homework. If they spend time on homework, they won’t hang out in the streets, do nothing at all and waste time.
However, teacher shouldn’t give students too much homework.
Firstly, there is no relationship between the time students spend on homework and the grades they get in school. "The more time students spend on homework, it's not clear that they are getting better grades or better test scores," said Robert Tai, an associate professor with the Curry School of Education at UVa. The more homework doesn’t just translate into nice grades. People do things for benefit. If lots of homework doesn’t bring students better grades, there is no benefit for much homework.
Also, homework doesn’t help the students who don’t want to do the homework. Too much homework only makes students feel tired of doing it, and the students do their homework with a kind of uncomfortable feeling because they don’t have time to relax. The quality of the homework might decrease comparing to normal amount of homework.
Too much homework leaves students no time to do some proper activities. As we all know, most colleges require not only students with nice grades, but also students who show their talent actively in the extracurricular activities. If students spend all night on homework, they will probably have no time to take part in the activities. And it’s clear that it’s no good for college application. The lack of extracurricular activities could cause some family problems as well. Here is an example. Rachel Bennett, 12, loves playing soccer, spending time with her grandparents and making jewelry with beads. But since she entered a magnet middle school in the fall -- and began receiving two to four hours of homework a night -- those activities have fallen by the wayside. "She's only a kid for so long," said her father, Alex Bennett, of Silverado Canyon. "There's been tears and frustration and family arguments. Everyone gets burned out and tired."
The last but not least, teachers will stress out because they need to grade so much work. If teachers don’t rest well in night, they will feel sleepy in the class so that students won’t understand what teachers teach in class. If students can’t understand what teachers teach in class, they will submit low-quality homework. And teachers will get angry! It’s an endless loop!
Based on the reasons above, my opinion is that teachers should give students proper amount of homework that is connected to what they taught in class.
